Joe Hasler took Sarah Russell for a carriage ride Friday night. But the young man had more on his mind than a drive through Forest Park. Joe had a ring in his pocket and hope in his heart. Half way through the ride he asked his girlfriend of three years if she would marry him.
When the couple returned to the pavilion, the small crowd of people standing around the barrel campfire anxiously awaited the outcome. They could tell the answer from the smiling faces descending from the horse drawn carriage.
A loud rousing cheer of congratulations was given when Joe said, "She said yes."
He laughed when he added, "She said it very quietly, then she said ,'But I'm cold."
Asked if she was surprised, Sarah said, "He's not good at keeping a secret. I found the bill for the ring. But I didn't know when he would ask," she continued with a big smile on the cold wintery night. "I didn't know it would be tonight."
When asked how he felt, Joe said, "I feel good." Then with a big grin he added, "I'm cold too, but love is warming my heart."
The crowd responded, "Awwwwwwww."
Joe is in the Army Reserve and lives in Clay City. He will soon be going to full time Army. Sarah is from Coalmont. No wedding date has been set.
