Anita S. Patterson, 23, is currently in jail, awaiting arraignment for alleged child neglect. Bond was set at $10,000, 10 percent allowed.
Brazil police officers removed an 18-month-old child from the family home Thursday evening after a call alerted police to a possible problem.
"There were signs of fairly recent physical neglect," Brazil Police Chief Terry Harrison said. "This is an active case. Our primary concern was to get the child out of the home. The baby is a super pleasant baby. Child Protection Services was contacted and they are investigating. It was obvious that we had to take action for everybody involved."
Harrison said that Child Protection Services would continue their investigation and the police department would continue their investigation with their findings being turned over to the Clay County Prosecutor's office.
A complete investigation of the entire family would be conducted, including the child's father.
According to Harrison, the child neglect or abuse problem is a year-round problem, not just around the holidays. He said that there had been several cases of child abuse and child neglect in the city this year.
