Democrat party head resigns

Friday, January 3, 2003

Tom Arthur, chairperson of the Clay County Democratic Party, has announced his resignation.

In a letter to County Clerk Mary Brown, dated Dec. 31, Arthur said, "I am resigning for several reasons. Unfortunately, when God created the heavens and the earth he only created 24 hours a day. As many of you know, I have recently become a new father and I want to spend as much time with Tara as possible."

He also said he needs more time to work on his Masters degree in educational administration.

The letter also reveals his disappointment.

"I have held this position for almost two years. In those two years I do not feel like I have motivated the party to a level of winning elections."

Democratic precinct committee chairperson will caucus to elect a new county party chairperson and secretary. That meeting is scheduled at 7 p.m. Jan. 21, in the Brazil City Hall council chambers.

Arthur is also a city councilman and will continue to serve in that capacity.
