Doug Barr (right) is sworn in as a new Clay County deputy sheriff by Judge Ernest Yelton on Monday. Sheriff Rob Carter holds the Bible.

Doug Barr was sworn in as the new Clay County Deputy Sheriff Monday morning by Circuit Judge Ernest Yelton at the Clay County Court House.

Barr's new boss, Sheriff Rob Carter Jr., held the Bible. Barr's own Bible was used in the ceremony.

Barr has been a reserve deputy for two years. He will attend the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy for a 13-week officer instruction program beginning in May.

The new deputy will work for three months with his training officer Deputy Mike Heaton. Barr has been in the trucking business for 25 years but said he's always wanted to work in law enforcement.

"I'm very excited and I'm looking forward to the challenge," he said.
