Three teens were injured, one fatally, in a morning crash Wednesday on Rio Grande Road. The pick-up truck, driven by Christopher Fox, 16, slid on the icy road, striking two trees, according to the state police.

Melanie N. Bemis, 14, of Brazil, was killed; Jeremiah Bemis, 15, and Fox were both injured. All three had Brazil addresses.

On Wednesday at 8:22 a.m., the Brazil Fire Department was called to assist Clay County Search & Rescue with the accident on Rio Grande (CR 1200N), west of SR 59.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a truck had left the roadway and went over an embankment. Melanie Bemis was ejected from the vehicle, receiving fatal injuries and another person was trapped inside the truck. A third person had exited the vehicle with minor injuries.

City firefighters began efforts to assist Clay County Search & Rescue and Dick Johnson Volunteer Fire Department to remove the trapped victim from the wreckage. Once extricated, Melanie was transported to St. Vincent Clay Hospital by Athens Ambulance and airlifted to Indianapolis.

The Brazil Fire Department was on the scene from 8:25 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. with two engines and five firefighters and then responded to St. Vincent Clay to assist the Lifeline helicopter.
