Police warn about purse snatchers

Thursday, January 23, 2003

Ladies, take a word of advice from your local police department.

"Keep your purses on your person when shopping. Do not set them in the top part of a shopping cart," suggests Brazil Police Chief Terry Harrison. Leaving your purse in the top part of the shopping cart invites thieves to grab your purse when you aren't looking and run."

In the past few months, the police department has had several cases of purses being stolen out of shopping carts. The thieves are trying to use the credit cards and write checks on the checking accounts.

"Be aware of your surroundings and look out for suspicious looking people near your cart. Pay particular attention to women without a purse," Harrison recommends.

The police department is suggesting that you only carry what you have to when shopping. Carry only one credit card and a few checks instead of your entire purse. Be sure to write down your charge card numbers so you can cancel them if necessary. Also, try to remember the last check number you used, so you can notify the bank immediately.

And, above all, notify the police and report it as soon as possible.
