Last week, the fourth grade students in Evelyn Greenwood's class at Staunton Elementary were treated to hot chocolate and donuts by their reading buddies from Cynthia Haseman's and Mavery Quinn's second grade classes.
Each week the fourth graders read library books to the second graders, modeling reading with expression, stopping at periods, pronouncing words correctly and asking comprehension questions when they are finished. The second graders then read a book they have practiced throughout the week. All three teachers are amazed at the excitement each of their students now have for reading.
During the year the students in these classes became friends and shared many fun activities as well. The fourth graders put together Thanksgiving and Christmas activity books for the second graders to enjoy over the holiday vacation and helped them write Santa Claus letters on the computer that were published in The Brazil Times. Second graders made their fourth grade buddies special Christmas presents. Many more fun activities are planned for the remainder of the year.
