WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. John Hostettler has been named chairman of the House Immigration, Border Security, and Claims Subcommittee.
"I look forward to serving as chairman of this important committee," said Hostettler. "The shaping and oversight of immigration policy will be critical to maintaining our national security in coming years. Sept. 11 demonstrated the need for Congress to take a serious look at immigration and border security policies. There will be many challenges and we will tackle them head on."
The Immigration Subcommittee is one of five subcommittees that falls under the jurisdiction of the House Judiciary Committee. Its oversight responsibilities include the Immigration and Naturalization Service, legal immigration programs, illegal immigration, border control, terrorism, detention and trafficking.
Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner said he looks forward to working with Chairman Hostettler on an ambitious agenda for the 108th Congress.
"Immigration policy and oversight are two of the most critical components to effectively securing the homeland as well as improving our economy. Representative Hostettler's quick grasp of issues and hard work will assist him greatly in this key leadership role," said Sensenbrenner.
