Patriot Packages drive halted

Wednesday, April 2, 2003

Due to orders from national security advisors, Brazil Fire Chief Joe Bennett said Tuesday that the station has temporarily halted the Armed Services Patriot Packages drive.

Because of overwhelming support nationally on care package drives, the shipping lanes have become clogged, Bennett explained, causing problems for people trying to send family members packages. Also, security measures have been tightened to prevent harmful substances, like anthrax slipping into shipments.

The local military unit firefighters were working with on the project accepted the items donated up Tuesday.

"Hopefully not too long down the road, we can resume the Patriot Packages," Bennett said, thanking those who have contributed to the project.
