Family waits to see if they are on TV

Wednesday, May 14, 2003

Harold and Michelle Netzler, their son Dean and his friend Devon Chamberlain, of Brazil, may be on "Candid Camera" tonight. A spring break in Florida last march got them more than a walk on the beach.

When they pulled up to the gated entrance to the parking lot at Clear Water Beach, an attendant asked them if they wanted a smoking or non-smoking parking space. Surprised and baffled, they replied they'd take non-smoking.

The worker said there were no non-smoking spaces available. The Netzlers thought the guy was wanting a bribe. Looking about the lot, Harold pointed and said he could see a couple open spaces. The attendant told them those were reserved for lifeguards. So Michelle volunteered that they'd take smoking parking spaces.

"You'd expose your family to smoking?" the attendant asked.

Almost in unison they answered, "Yes, if it'll get us a parking space."

Harold said, "Just give us a ticket and we'll take our chances on finding a space".

"OK. But you'll have to do us a favor first," the attendant said pointing toward the lot. "Look at that white van over there and smile. You're on Candid Camera!"

The Netzlers and Devon all received a letter recently saying their segment had been tentatively scheduled to air at 7 or 8 p.m. (check local listings) today, on PAX TV, cable channel 15. They each received a $30 check as promised.

The letter said there were no guarantees the segment would air and, if it did, there was a possibility that some individuals may be edited out. So the Netzlers and Devon won't know until show time, just like the rest of the viewing audience, whether they get to, "Smile, you're on Candid Camera!"
