Smile -- they were on 'Candid Camera'

Thursday, May 15, 2003

Harold and Dean Netzler and Devon Chamberlain were seen on a Candid Camera segment last night on PAX TV. Michelle Netzler wasn't seen but her voice was heard.

During a spring break vacation in Clear Water Beach, Fla., in March, they were delayed at the parking lot entrance gate. The attendant asked if they wanted smoking or non-smoking parking spots.

A little bewildered, they replied non-smoking. The attendant told them there were only smoking spaces available so they'd have to wait. The perplexed group tried to convince the worker they'd take smoking or whatever they could get. They just wanted to go to the beach. Finally they were told to "Smile, you're on Candid Camera".

The Netzlers had a party and invited lots of family and friends to watch the TV show with them. Devon Chamberlain's mother, Terry, was asked about Devon's reaction to the program.

"He thought it was so cool that he was on national TV," she said. "We felt like we had a celebrity in the family. We got at least 20 calls after the show. The phone just rang off the hook. So many people probably saw it because it was in the paper."

Terry said they thought it was so amazing that of all the places in the world the Candid Camera people could have been that day, they were in Clear Water Beach, Florida, and picked a car from Brazil, Indiana.

Devon said that the actual event lasted nearly 15 minutes or so. He thought Harold was beginning to lose his patience but he kept his cool.

"We all filmed the program last night and watched it over and over," Terry said. "We thought it was very exciting. This is definitely going in the scrapbook."
