Brazil hit by series of arson fires

Tuesday, May 20, 2003

A morning blaze over the weekend has been ruled arson and is the latest of what looks to be part of a pattern in Brazil. The Brazil Fire and Police Departments are asking for help from the community in locating the criminal/s involved in any of the arsons committed this year.

A residential fire at 621 S. Grant St. Sunday at 5:30 a.m. is the fifth case of arson, according to Brazil Fire Chief Joe Bennett. If anyone has information pertaining to any of those fires, please contact the Brazil Police Department at 446-2211 or contact the Arson Hot Line at 1-800-382-4628.

"Arson is a serious crime that could cause injury or death to firefighters as well as civilians," Bennett said, explaining that vacant or seldom used buildings are often the targets of arsonists. "If you own or know someone who owns a vacant or seldom used building, please secure it by locking all the doors and boarding up or replacing broken windows."

Call the police department or the owner of the structure if you see any suspicious person on the property.
