Two Terre Haute men were injured during a police pursuit shortly after midnight Thursday. One of the men later died as a result of his injuries.
Indiana State Police report a state trooper tried to stop a vehicle driven by Randy L. Smith, 24, following multiple traffic violations. When the trooper approached the rear of the car, the vehicle sped off and the trooper pursued. The trooper saw Smith and a passenger, Daryl M. Hetterscheidt, 20, throwing items from the car. The items were later identified as material commonly used to make methamphetamine.
At a small hill crest, near the Vigo/Clay County Line on Dallas Drive in Clay County, Smith apparently lost control of the vehicle. The car slid 200 feet before stopping in a ditch. Smith was thrown from the vehicle and Hetterscheidt was partially ejected. Both men were transported to Regional Hospital, Terre Haute, where Hetterscheidt was later pronounced deceased.
The crash remains under investigation.
