The planning is paying off, and Brazil's new Popcorn Festival is cooking.
Over the months, the event has gone from being a vague plan to an actual event, and co-planner Evelyn Brown couldn't be happier.
"It's been a real learning experience," Brown said. "But it's been really exciting, too. The community involvement has been nothing short of excellent."
Many things have been done to prepare the event, and there is still a lot more to do, but Brown is confident things will go well once the actual event takes place. All hassles aside, she (along with other organizers and planners) cannot wait to see her work become reality.
So far, a carnival has been scheduled and the fireworks to gospel event (gospel music performed with fireworks overhead), among others, are ready to go. Insurance certificates for several events, such as the rock climbing wall, still have to be handled, however, and contracts for vendors must be settled before the events can take place.
"Everything is new to us this time," said Brown. "The county has never really had the ability to do something on this scale, and now I think we can show them what we can do."
While she is reluctant to name any names for fear of forgetting someone, Brown says that she would like to thank Kiwanis International for their help and ConAgra, where "the big money comes from." On the whole, however, she would like to thank the community for its help, both individuals and businesses.
"The amount of support and sponsorship we have been getting is amazing. Nearly everyone we've contacted has been able to help us somehow, and many times people have contacted us first."
The accomplishments have been many, but there are still several things to do before the Popcorn Festival can be considered ready. Brown stresses that they need volunteers for things they "don't even know (they) need volunteers for yet" and that any interested parties are invited to visit their next meeting, tonight at 7 at the YMCA. Additionally, persons who cannot make it to the meeting but are still interested can call her at 448-2307.
