Kristina A. Byerly, 42, of 10855 1/2 S. SR 59, was killed when she was struck by a pickup truck Friday night. The truck was driven by Timothy P. Byers, 49, of Worthington, Ind., according to a Clay County Sheriff's Department press release.
At approximately 10:33 p.m., dispatchers received a 911 call that a pedestrian had been struck and killed by a vehicle on SR 59 just north of CR 1100S.
Sgt. Rob Gambill, Deputy Dan Best, members of the Clay City Fire Department, Lewis Township Fire and Rescue and Athens Ambulance personnel were dispatched to the scene.
When responders arrived, they found a female, identified as Byerly, lying on the highway. Medical personnel checked the body and found no signs of life. Coroner Rick Swearingen Jr. was called to the scene.
Byers said he was driving south on SR 59 with his wife and daughter when he saw what he thought was an animal lying in the roadway. He then slowed and realized it was a human. Byers attempted to stop his pickup truck and trailer, but could not avoid running over the Byerly's body.
The death remains under investigation and the Clay County Coroner has ordered that an autopsy be performed.
