Man dies after U.S. 40 crash

Friday, September 5, 2003

A West Terre Haute man died after being transported by helicopter to Methodist Hospital yesterday afternoon. He had run his truck off the road seven hours earlier.

Police say Daniel Jarvis Jr., 23, was headed east on U.S. 40 about 5 a.m. Thursday morning. He was on his way to work at Great Dane Trailers in Brazil.

Jarvis apparently fell asleep at the wheel and veered south off of the highway just after passing the Waterworks Road intersection. He traveled approximately 380 feet before hitting an embankment and landing in a ditch 63 feet south of U.S.40. His truck was concealed by brush and trees.

A passing motorist saw Jarvis trying to climb out of the brush just before noon and notified the Brazil City Police.

Police Chief Terry Harrison reported that Jarvis appeared to have facial, head and leg injuries with possible internal injuries. He was conscious at the time police arrived but remembered nothing about the accident except that he was on his way to work.

Jarvis's 1987 Dodge pick-up truck appeared to be totaled. The incident is still under investigation.
