Home burns while family camps

Friday, September 26, 2003

The Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department was called out Thursday at 4:30 a.m. to investigate a possible structure fire at 5733 N. Co. Rd. 400 E, Brazil.

Jackson Township Fire Chief Lester Fagg said they brought in the Center Point Volunteer Fire Department for tanker assistance and the fire was knocked down within about 15 minutes.

The fire apparently originated near the family room of the home of Ken and Hope Wilkins. Most of the flames shot straight up through a skylight, Fagg explained, helping to contain the blaze to that area. Still, he observed "a lot of heat and smoke damage throughout the trailer."

Fortunately, no one was injured as the Wilkinses were camping at Fowler Park. Their trip was

"supposed to be a complete getaway", according to Hope, but their vacation was cut short. Ken is thankful that at least it happened while they were not home. Fagg added that "the situation could have been a lot worse."

The couple was scheduled to meet with their insurance company this morning, although the cause of the fire had not yet been determined. In the meantime, their insurance company has provided them with lodging at Howard Johnson.
