The 2003 Komen Wabash Valley Race for the Cure will be held Oct. 18 at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. Opening ceremonies and Survivor Tributes will be held at 9 a.m. and the Celebration Fun Walk/Run will begin at 9:30 a.m. The 5K race will begin at 10 a.m., and will be led by the Honorary Chairs of the Race, the Indiana State University Women's Basketball Team.
This year's race will also include a special guest performance by former New Kid on the Block, Danny Wood. Wood, who lost his mother to breast cancer in 1999, will perform acoustic versions of songs from his new solo album, "Second Face."
This year marks the seventh anniversary of the Komen Wabash Valley Race for the Cure, which is now the largest 5K in the Wabash Valley. Since the first race in 1997, the day has evolved into a family event, with entertainment, a silent auction and expo tent highlighting our local and national partners. With close to 3,000 people in attendance, the 2002 Wabash Valley race raised the most money in its six-year history.
Seventy-five percent of the funds raised will be used to support local grants; the remaining funds will be remitted to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's Research Program. Through this continuing support, Komen offers one of the country's most innovative and responsive grant programs in breast cancer today.
Individual registration before Oct. 5 is $18 and $20 after that date. Interested parties can register online or download an application at www.komenwabashvalley.org.
