The Swope Art Museum has announced completion of construction for the third and final stage of its five-year renovation project.
The last stage includes the completion of the museum's public areas including the remaining two second-story galleries, restrooms and a catering kitchen. The museum also converted a classroom space into an education gallery during the final phase of renovations. The galleries have been brought back to the art deco style in keeping with the original 1942 interior architecture of the Sheldon Swope Art Museum.
The newly-renoated galleries will be open to the public beginning Friday. The new galleries will display "Art of the American West", "Art from the 1930s-1940s" and "Art from the 1950s to the Present."
A free, all day public opening 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday will showcase the renovated areas. Refreshments will be served and docents will speak about the artwork.
The Swope is located at 25 S. Seventh St., at the corner of Ohio Street in downtown Terre Haute. The museum is open Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, noon-5. Admission is free.
