New home of Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Building at 7 W. National Ave. will be renovated and leased to the BMV next year.

The local Bureau of Motor Vehicles will be moving to a new location next year. According to BMV spokesperson Miriam Viernes, from Indianapolis, the Brazil branch will be moving to 7 W. National Ave. They are currently located at 15 Forest Park Plaza.

Movieland USA was previously housed at that location. The building received extensive damage when the old Arketex building, adjacent to it, caught fire Sept. 11, 2002.

The Arketex building was gutted by the fire and had to be torn down. The Movieland building apparently acquired water damage while the Arketex fire was being controlled. Then it received more extensive structural damage from falling debris when the adjacent building was being demolished. It has set empty since that time.

Both properties were purchased by Brazil Property LLC and will be leased by Lewis Commercial Properties. The two companies are both owned by husband and wife, Fred and Pam Lewis, of Oolitic, Ind. They can be reached at 812-279-4717.

Fred Lewis said the building has 3,800 square feet of space. The BMV will lease 3,000 of that and the other 800 sq. ft. is available for lease.

"There will be a complete interior renovation," Lewis said. "Plus we'll put on a new roof, new awning and paint the exterior. The other lot will be paved for parking. There will be approximately 24 parking spaces."

The projected renovation start date is Nov. 1. The tentative schedule for the BMV to move into the new facility is Feb. 1, 2004.
