Rep. Thomas votes on property tax measure

Wednesday, November 26, 2003

State Rep. Andy Thomas (R-Brazil) voted no on a bill that would have shifted $250 million to farmers, renters, small business owners and middle class home owners, according to a press release from the Indiana House of Representatives.

"The objective of this special session should be to not do any more harm to the taxpayers," said Thomas.

As of Friday, property tax bills had been sent out in 52 of 92 counties. The lack of complete data has been a concern for many throughout the debate on the HB 1001. Without all the information, many fear hasty action could result in more confusion and less true relief in the future.

"We owe it to our constituents, as their elected leaders, to act with responsibility for them," said Thomas.

HB 1001 passed out of the house with a 51-48 vote. The bill was then sent to the State Senate for consideration.
