CCMF spreads some holiday cheer

Friday, December 5, 2003

A little Christmas cheer was spread throughout the community Monday afternoon by the Clay Civic Memorial Foundation. CCMF president Dr. Hal Glidden dispersed checks to various philanthropic organizations to help them fund their benevolent projects.

Leaders from five area associations were on hand at the Riddell National Bank to receive their CCMF gifts. The Clay County Christmas Assistance Program, represented by Holly Culver and Linda Nicoson, received $1,000. Ann Miller picked up $600 for the Clay County Well Child Clinic. Vickie Mace, of Paint the Town project, was very pleased with their $1,000 donation. The Breakfast Optimist Club president, Vickie Lawhorn, accepted a check for $1,000. And John Lee, president of the United Way of Clay County, was all smiles as he took $1,500 for his organization.

The Clay Civic Memorial Foundation is a tax exempt organization formed to accept contributions, bequeaths, life insurance, property, stock and trusts. The income from those funds is periodically distributed to worthy community projects.

Distributions are given to community organizations, as opposed to individuals. Funds are directed to youth activities, recreation, improvement of community property, education, charity, health care, arts, historical improvement and literacy. All distributions of the CCMF are limited to Clay County.

The Clay Civic Memorial Foundation was formed in 1977 by a group of Brazil business and professional men. Only two men have chaired the presidency of the organization. Dr. Robert Maurer was the first president holding the office through 1986. Glidden took over and has been president since 1987. More than $500,000 has been collected and distributed in Clay County by the CCMF.

Operating costs are less than 4 percent of the amount distributed, most of that going for printing and postage. All officers and board members serve on a volunteer basis without compensation of any kind.

The annual cost of membership in the Foundation is $5 per individual and $25 for a business. An individual life membership is $100. The money collected in the membership fund pays all of the operating cost of the Foundation. Memberships may be mailed to P.O. Box 194, Brazil, IN, 47834.
