Digging away

Tuesday, December 9, 2003

Several students work on the landscape surrounding Cumberland Academy, the alternative school, located behind North Clay Middle School. The group, which included (clockwise from left) Kaiti Minks, Melissa Wall, Elizabeth Lopez, David Cook, Eric Neese, Linda Wright, Janie Hinkle (kneeling) and Cody Bryan, spent much of the day under the direction of Cindy Stearley of VisionQuest. They planted lilac trees, rose bushes and perennials and were planning to add mulch and landscaping rock, all of which were purchased with funding from the CAPE grant. The students will be researching how to care for each of the plants on the Internet and putting the information into "care books," which they will use as guides in maintaining the landscape. The kids are also visiting White River Gardens on Dec. 12 in order to learn more about different kinds of plants.
