Lady Eels drop decision to Patriots

Thursday, January 15, 2004

The Clay City girls basketball squad continued their rollercoaster season on Monday night with a 50-47 loss to host Owen Valley.

The loss was the third straight defeat for the Eels, a streak that followed a three-game winning streak and another three-game losing streak.

The Eels got off to a slow start offensively in the first half, scoring just 14 first half points. However, the Patriots were struggling to put the ball in the hoop as well, holding just a 19-14 lead after 16 minutes.

Owen Valley was the first team to get on track in the second half and it was the difference in the game.

The Patriots got nine points from Sandra Truax in the period as Owen Valley outscored Clay City 20-14 in the quarter and pushed their lead to 39-28 after three quarters.

The Eels made a fourth quarter push on the strength of eight points from Cameron Gerber and seven from Whitney McWilliams to close to within three points at the final buzzer.

For the game, McWilliams led the Eels with 15 points while Gerber chipped in 11 for the Eels (5-7 overall).

Clay City will look to snap their losing skid when they return home for a Thursday night SWIAC contest versus Bloomfield at 7:30 p.m.

In junior varsity action the Eels fell 26-17 to the Patriots despite six points from Kristen Tyler and four points from Chelsee Gerber. Lacey Rood and Heather Johnson each had three points.
