New safety director is fresh out of college

Monday, January 19, 2004

Some people have trouble securing a job directly after they graduate college. Tricia Strbac is not one of those people.

In fact, Strbac had a job in Brazil's City Hall before she even attained her degree.

"I graduated from ISU in December of '03," Strbac, who was appointed to her position as Safety Director in November of 2003, said. "But I had to graduate before they'd give me the full-time position."

Strbac said that her degree was a Bachelor's in Safety Management.

As Safety Director, Strbac has many duties to fulfill. She has to make sure various city employees and offices follow OSHA codes and regulations, order safety equipment for the same employees and offices, and handles workers compensation responsibilities.

She said that her predecessor, John McPherson, took a full-time job in Greencastle and she happened upon the opening. Former Mayor Kenny Crabb appointed her after she submitted her resume to the city.

Originally from Hebron, Ind., Strbac says she has a few ties to Brazil. Her paternal grandfather was from around the area, making her adjustment to the town a little easier.

"That's about as localized as you're going to get," she said with a laugh.
