Free health insurance for kids is available

The Clay County Office of Family and Children would like to remind residents of the availability of Hoosier Healthwise.

Hoosier Healthwise is a health insurance program for Indiana children under the age of 18, pregnant women, and low-income families. According to the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, the health care is provided at little or no cost to Indiana families enrolled in the program.

The enrolled member chooses a doctor to get regular checkups and health care for illnesses. Other health needs such as prescriptions, dental care, vision care, family planning services and mental health services are also available as part of the Hoosier Healthwise program.

"We've noticed a decrease in the number of participants," said Gail Oliver, public assistance supervisor at the Clay County Office of Family and Children. "There has not been a decrease in the need, however. We think it may be because people aren't aware of it's availability or don't know where to go to apply for the insurance."
