Scofflaws pay price

Wednesday, January 21, 2004

About 20 Brazil residents have paid the price for breaking the law. Those residents have been ticketed for violating a city ordinance: They were parking on city sidewalks.

The ordinance, which has been on the books for years, draws a hefty $25 fine per occurence.

"We've been receiving a lot of complaints," Chief Mark Loudermilk said Tuesday. "People can't get up and down the sidewalks because of vehicles parked illegally.

The problem is not limited to one part of town, either. Loudermilk said complaints have come from all over Brazil.

"I want to get the word out that we are issuing citations. If people have a problem in Brazil, they can call the police department and we will issue citations."

Non-emergency calls, such as complaints about illegal parking, should be made to 443-6591; however, emergency calls should be made to 911.
