The new tax rates have been certified by the state and received by the Auditor's office.
"We anticipate that the tax bills will be mailed out Feb. 13," Clay County Auditor Joe Dierdorf said Thursday at the courthouse. "And we anticipate the due date for the 2002 pay in 2003 property taxes will be March 15."
Dierdorf said he and Clay County Treasurer Jack Withers will be drafting a letter for the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance. That department, which is a new agency formed out of the State Board of Tax Commission, has to approve the collection date.
"These dates are based on finishing up the process we have yet to do in the Auditor's and Treasurer's office," Dierdorf said. "Those dates are correct to the best of our knowledge."
By statute the normal time between billing and due date is 15 days. Dierdorf said they are extending that time by two weeks to help the taxpayers as much as possible.
The delay in the tax billing was due to the state mandated reassessment. Property tax payers should remember that the taxes they are paying now are the 2002 taxes that should have been due in 2003. They will have to pay a full year of taxes or whatever they did not pay last year.
The 2003 pay 2004 taxes will also come due this year. Dierdorf was unaware at what stage of the process those taxes are in.
If anyone has questions about their 2002 due 2003 final tax bill, they should call the Clay County Treasurer's office at 812-448-9009. Any questions about assessed value of property should be directed to the Auditor's office at 812-448-9001.
