Fourth and fifth graders at East Side and Meridian Elementary Schools participated in the "Battle of the Books" championship Thursday and Friday afternoon as part of the Young Hoosier Book Award program, sponsored by the Association of Indiana Media Educators.
Within each fourth and fifth grade class, children chose groups to compete against one another, answering questions involving books they had read, selected from a group of 20 books written during the past five years.
The fourth graders competed Thursday afternoon at East Side Elementary. The winning East Side fourth grade group, which consisted of Courtney Anderson, Baylor Girton, Susie Gorman, Mitchell Noel and alternate T.J. Decker, claimed victory over the Meridian fourth grade representatives, Austin Brown, Lacey Bruer, Harley Foster, Jeffry Manis and alternate Hannah Breitweiser, 55 to 54.
East Side's fifth grade group, Ashlee Ball, Josiah Alstott, Alyssa Berner, Wade Langley and alternate Brady Vanatti, beat Meridian's fifth graders, Desiree Edwards, Macy Mayle, Madison Sullivan, Zach Ninesling and alternate Nikki Rogers in another close match, 48 to 47. This contest took place at Meridian Elementary on Friday afternoon.
This spring, each fourth and fifth grade student will pick his or her favorite of the 20 books. Their votes will be counted, along with the votes of children all over Indiana, and the winning book will be announced in May.
