Bill Pearman, candidate for Democratic Congressman from Indiana's 8th district has announced his new education program for Indiana -- No Blame, No excuses.
"It's time to stop worrying about who is to blame for our educational problems," said in a prepared statement. "We can blame educators, parents, students, school boards, taxpayers, state legislatures, the State Department of Education and even the federal government. It's time to stop pointing fingers and join hands and accept no excuses to bring our educational system into the 21st century."
Some of the problems we face in education, according to Pearman, are too many students left behind, too many students unable to read or do math to grade level, true graduation rates around 75 percent, too little parental and community involvement, underpaid and under-appreciated teachers, standardized tests driving the curriculum, and the federal government usurping too many powers delegated to state and local governments.
According to Pearman, before we decide exactly how to improve our schools, we need to ask some very important questions:
- What kind of education do we want for our children?
- Are we involving parents, teachers and students in educational decision-making?
- Are we getting our money's worth? If not, what should we change?
- Does our current system reach all students? If not, what do we need to change?
