A semi, believed to be loaded with cylinders of oxygen, overturned in the westbound lane of U.S. 40 about a mile east of Great Dane on Thursday at about 12:30 p.m. The westbound lane was closed for a short period of time.
According to Indiana State Police, Jamie Shepard, age and residence unknown, was driving a 1994 Ford semi for a company out of Indianapolis. The vehicle overturned, reason unknown, entrapping the driver.
An off-duty Clay County reserve officer, who witnessed the clean-up, said Red Bird wrecker stabilized the vehicle and Search and Rescue "popped" the door. Then the driver, who had been alert and oriented throughout the procedure, was able to get out of the vehicle on his own.
Indiana State Police said there were no serious injuries. Assisting State Police were the Clay County Sheriff's Department, the Van Buren Township firefighters and Search and Rescue.
Just minutes later, in Parke County, another wreck resulted in a fatality. According to Indiana State Police, Joseph Jimenez, 27, New York, was driving a 1995 Kia on U.S. 36, east of Coloma Road.
Jimenez's vehicle left the roadway, reason unknown, and hit a tree head on. He was transported to West Central Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Road conditions were wet at the time of the accident.
