Two transported after wreck

Monday, June 28, 2004

Two passengers were trapped in a vehicle Friday evening about 5:50 p.m. after the vehicle they were riding in wrecked on CR 200 W. Hannah M. Maybaugh, 17, Brazil, and 7-month-old Kullen Maybaugh were taken by Air Evac to Methodist Hospital after they were extricated from the car.

According to the police report by Clay County Dep. Doug Barr, the driver, Brek B. Meunier, 17, Brazil, was traveling northbound on CR 200W. in his 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass. He told police his vehicle broke traction with the gravel road and he lost control of the vehicle.

Meunier crossed the west side of the roadway and exited the road into a west side ditch. The vehicle then slid onto its passenger side, striking a utility pole in the middle of the roof. The car spun around the pole counter clockwise flipping completely over on its top, trapping the passengers inside.

Meunier was able to exit the vehicle on his own prior to emergency personnel arriving on the scene. He told police he was traveling around 50 mph and lost control.

A witness who was traveling southbound on CR 200W. saw the vehicle coming toward him. He said it appeared to him that Meunier was traveling at a high rate of speed. The witness said he noticed the car beginning to fishtail in the road. He could see the driver turning the wheel sharply each time he would begin to slide. The witness was concerned that Meunier was going to hit him so he stopped and watched.

Hannah Maybaugh was wearing safety equipment and Kullen Maybaugh was in a child restraint. Meunier complained of neck pain. Hannah Maybaugh had injuries to her arm with possible fractures. The baby had head contusions. The condition of all three victims was unknown at press time.
