Ryan Brand of North Clay Middle School was one of the eight regional winners in the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns (IACT) 4th Annual "If I were Mayor, I would ..." statewide essay contest.
Two winning essays were chosen from the northern, north central, south central and southern parts of the state.
IACT received 3,700 entries from sixth grade students across the state and Brand's essay scored as one of the highest in the south central region.
Brand competed against sixth grade students in Terre Haute, Greencastle, Indianapolis, Columbus and Richmond.
"This is a great honor for the City of Brazil. It is proof of the hard work that teachers in our schools perform every day," Mayor Tom Arthur said in a prepared statement.
All winners of the "If I were Mayor, I would ..." essay contest will be recognized at an awards luncheon during the Indiana Conference of Mayors on July 16 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Hilton Hotel (Hamilton Hall), Grand Wayne Center, 1020 S. Calhoun St., Fort Wayne, Ind.
