Brazil's Brandon Hodge won a First Place trophy in the Dr. Dashboard Car Show June 20 at the Vigo County Fairgrounds. The son of Mike and Cindy Hodge, who own Mike's Economy Muffler, Brandon has worked on cars with his dad for most of his 16 years.
According to Dr. Dashboard sales associate Stacie Wagle, this was the first of what's to be an annual event.
"It was an excellent turnout with over 200 entries and more than 5,000 people in attendance," Wagle said.
Brandon's car, which competed in the Street category, had a major facelift in the past year. The 1996 teal green Chevrolet Cavalier is now a shiny white with a royal blue and white interior Z24 Custom.
"Nolte's of Brazil did the upholstering," Brandon said. "And Chris Krampe did the body work."
But Brandon and his dad did the rest. They added a body kit to make it look special, added a wing, neon underglows, headlight strobes, blue custom lights, custom wheels, painted the dash, console and inside pieces, and replaced the hubcaps with 18-inch Zorro 10s.
"Me and my dad put the body kit on it, which is the ground effects," Brandon said. "We customized the dual exhaust just to make it sound cool."
The Northview High School Junior spends a lot of his time with cars. On weekends he races with his dad at the ET Raceway in Linton in the Street class. And with some success.
"I'm third in points right now," Brandon said. "The season ends in October."
Brandon was asked how he felt when it was announced that his Custom Cavalier had taken first place. With a smile almost as bright as his car's interior, he answered, "I was very happy."
