Mayor requests help with storm damage

Thursday, July 22, 2004

The Indiana Department of Local Government Finance has cut the City Street Department budget by over $100,000. To balance the budget, Mayor Tom Arthur has not replaced employees as they resign from the department. The department is working with only seven employees, down from 12 in January.

Due to the heavy storm July 13, the Street Department has been working diligently to collect the entire city's tree damage. Anyone wishing to assist the city with clean-up may do so by contacting the Street Department at 448-8501 to arrange for dumping.

"Any help the citizens of Brazil can provide would be greatly appreciated," Arthur said. "The City Street Department has been working hard to pick up all tree damage. Unfortunately, everyday work is being neglected."

Citizens should not pay to have limbs removed from their property. The city will provide the service free of charge, but is looking for a little assistance from homeowners who have the ability.

Estimated cleanup time is two to three weeks.
