A Brazil man was arrested earlier this month in connection with an armed robbery at Martinsville.
David Turner, 20, was charged with assisting in a robbery and resisting law enforcement. He remained in the Morgan County Jail Tuesday with bail set at $12,500 plus $1,000, a jail spokesman said. Turner made an initial court appearance July 13.
According to The Associated Press report, police received a call shortly before midnight on July 11 that a clerk was injured during an armed robbery attempt at the Big Foot store next door to the Sheriff's Department on the Indiana 39 bypass.
Sheriff's Detective Dan Riffel said a jailer shone a spotlight on a car parked on the road alongside the jail. A man jumped into the car and headed east into the city about 30 miles south of Indianapolis, Riffel said.
Two Martinsville police officers, who were at the jail, chased the car. When the driver doubled back, police blocked the car at an intersection and arrested the men inside, Scott Schaeffer, 22, of Martinsville, and Turner.
Police believe the men tried to get rid of the stolen money because officers found a pile of cash under the car and bills strewn along the street.
Schaeffer, who police said grabbed a female clerk by the neck and threatened her with a baseball bat, faces charges of armed robbery, battery causing injury and theft. The clerk's injuries were not serious and she was treated at the scene, Riffel said.
