Mayor Arthur honors IU Association

Friday, July 30, 2004

With his wife's influence, Mayor Tom Arthur has proclaimed Aug. 2 as IU Alumni Association Day in the City of Brazil.

The proclamation comes in connection with the alumni association's 150th anniversary.

Arthur did not go to school at IU, but his wife, Penny, did. So, he knew she would think the association's request for a proclamation was a good idea.

"You know how, in education, they say there is no such thing as a stupid question?" he asked his wife. "You know, I think this is a stupid question, but do you think this is a good idea?"

She, as a loyal alumnus, agreed it was a no-brainer.

"There are so many Indiana graduates in our area and they do so much for the community and the state," he said.

So, the mayor decided to make the proclamation.

Arthur has no other ties to the university, but, "I grew up in Spencer, at IU's back door," he said.

He added, "If any other university asked me to make a similar proclamation, I would do the same thing."

The proclamation reads:

"WHEREAS, The Indiana University Alumni Association will celebrate 150th anniversary this year; and

"WHEREAS, over the last 150 years countless alumni volunteers, led by 11 association chief executives, have served Indiana University and its alumni; and

"WHEREAS, during its century-and-a-half of existence, the Indiana University Alumni association has launched the IU Varsity Club, IU Sports Network and Hoosiers for Higher Education; and

"WHEREAS, the Indiana University Alumni Association is one of the nation's largest alumni organizations with more than 460,000 living graduates; and

"WHEREAS, the Indiana University Alumni Association strives to connect and engage alumni through programs, services and communication; and

"WHEREAS, the Indiana University Alumni association works to assist the university, faculty, and students in a myriad of ways helping to address financial, cultural, political and supportive issues; and

"WHEREAS, MORE THAN 200,000 Indiana University alumni currently live and work in the State of Indiana;

"NOW, THEREFORE, I, Thomas L. Arthur, Mayor of the City of Brazil, Indiana, do hereby proclaim the day of August 2, 2004 as IU ALUMNI ASSOCIATION DAY

"IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed, the great seal of the City of Brazil, Indiana, at City Hall this 28th day of July, 2004

"Mayor Thomas L. Arthur, City of Brazil"
