Brazil police arrested two Florida men in connection with the theft of a Missouri vehicle Saturday.
City police were called to east Jackson Street Saturday after they were advised of two men fighting along the street. Upon their arrival one man, Shelton Eugene Harmon, of Belleview, Fla., fled southeast into the woods behind Page's. He was not found until later in the evening. The other suspect, Lance Milton Lopez, also of Belleview, stayed on the scene. According to a report Lopez was "looking for the keys to a vehicle."
Responding Officer Chris Blila checked Lopez's identification and asked which vehicle he was driving. Lopez apparently pointed out a red and gray Chevrolet S-10 with Missouri plates, claiming that he and Harmon had borrowed the truck from a friend. Sgt. David L. Archer ran a check on the vehicle and discovered that it was reported stolen in Marshfield, Missouri.
Lopez was placed under arrest and questioned about his involvement in the theft. He said that he and Harmon had stolen another vehicle in Ocala, Fla. and driven it to Missouri, where it broke down. The two then stole the S-10.
Later that evening Harmon was found laying in the bushes near the old railroad tracks and was also arrested.
Both suspects were taken to the Clay County Jail and charged with auto theft. Shelton was also arrested on outstanding warrants from Fla.
The Brazil Police Department was assisted by deputies from the Clay County Sheriff's Department in the case.
