Calling student volunteers one of our nation's most valuable resources, U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh selected Kristy Backfish as the Northview High School representative for the second annual Indiana Service Leaders Summit. Bayh and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) are hosting the summit in Indianapolis on Saturday to draw attention to the outstanding community service work performed by high school students across Indiana and to inspire them to continue volunteering throughout their lives. The event is part of Senator Bayh's broader efforts to promote national service across America by expanding volunteer opportunities.
"Kristy will join more than one hundred dedicated, hard-working students from across Indiana at the Service Leaders Summit," Bayh said. "These students put in extra hours outside of their school responsibilities to help thousands of Hoosiers in their communities, and I am proud to have this opportunity to thank them for their efforts and encourage more students to take part in future service projects."
As part of the summit this year, students will join Senator Bayh in creating care packages for Hoosier troops currently serving in Iraq. Each student has been asked to collect materials that will be used in the care packages in the weeks before the summit.
