Two Clay County residents were injured in an early afternoon accident near Brazil on Saturday.

At 1:45 p.m., a vehicle driven by Kyle J. Colson, 16, of Brazil, heading northbound on S.R. 59 near the Clay County Fairgrounds, crossed into the southbound lane, struck a southbound vehicle driven by Donna L. Hostetler, 67, of Brazil. The drivers were transported via medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. Information as to the extent of their injuries was not immediately available.

The crash is being investigated by the Clay County Sheriff's Department.

Deputy Doug Barr said that a witness to the incident saw the northbound vehicle veer abruptly left, crossing the southbound lane, striking a mailbox then driving in the ditch until it re-entered S.R. 59 into the path of the Hostetler vehicle.

Colson received head injuries and was trapped in the vehicle. Hostetler's upper leg and hip were fractured.

Both vehicles were considered a total loss, estimated in excess of $25,000.
