City hopes insurance will pay to repair tombstones

Monday, November 29, 2004

About 60 grave markers, like these, row upon row, some small, one more than 6 feet tall, were recently smashed by unknown vandals. The crime took place in the Old Hill Cemetery.

The City's insurance carrier wants family members to replace the markers, but it is hoped city insurance will pay for the repairs.

The City has been unable to locate many of the deceaseds' family members.

At last week's City Council meeting, Mayor Tom Arthur announced Brazil Monument Co. has been authorized to repair the grave markers. The City's insurance carrier is expected to reimburse at least some of the total cost which is unknown at this time.

Meanwhile, City Police Detective Martin Beasley asks anyone with information about the vandalism contact him at the City Police station.
