The McKinley Hill Church of Christ Relay For Life Team sponsored a White Elephant Sale at the church April 1.

"The fun part is when the item isn't quite what the buyer thought it would be," team member Becky Bartlett said.

During a White Elephant Sale people bid to purchase items without knowing what they will get. Some items are very decorated, while others can be wrapped any old way. The secret is figuring out which are the good items, and which ones aren't.

"I spent $10 on a box of crackers one time," Bartlett said, explaining that it is fun watching people open their package and show off their purchases. "I only did it because it was wrapped like the package sold before it, and it was really a nice thing."

The group raised more than $650 for The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life Event coming up later this month.

Scheduled for 6 p.m. April 30-6 a.m. May 1 at the Brazil YMCA, the Clay County Relay For Life "Driving Cancer Out of Our Community" gives the community a chance to work together to create a powerful unified effort with one goal in mind: To one day banish cancer.
