Committee asks street be renamed for Brazil's 'Santa Claus'

Wednesday, April 13, 2005

Tuesday, the City Council responded to a citizen request to rename Colfax Street north of Hendrix Street to the end.

The Christmas in the Park organization requested the street be renamed with a Santa Claus theme to honor resident and long-time Santa Claus Bill Beeler.

While Mayor Tom Arthur agreed it was a positive idea, several residents would be affected by the name change. He told the Council a secondary request dealt with renaming a service road in Forest Park by the Rotary shelter.

"You'd have to change Halbert on the south side to benefit him," said Councilman Jim Sheese, who pointed out Beeler's door does not face Colfax Street, leaving his mailing address unchanged.

Meanwhile, Councilwoman Pat Heffner said all residents whose addresses would be affected would have to agree with the name change before the Council took action.

"It's nice to honor a man who's done a lot for the community," Trout said. "But there's something to be said for consistency."

Arthur and Council members agreed the Brazil Park Board should handle the matter, with the understanding the Council prefers a road or center at the park be named in Beeler's honor.
