Arson suspected in barn fire

Tuesday, April 19, 2005

At 3:24 a.m. this morning, firefighters were dispatched to a barn fire at the Joe Sanders' residence at 2718 W. C.R. 1100 N.

A metal pole barn, full with vehicles, was fully engulfed, threatening a second barn. Aggressive attempts at fire suppression were hindered due to stored compressed gas cylinders exploding inside the barn.

Arson is suspected. The Indiana State Fire Marshal will be on site investigating the cause of the fire later today.

No injuries were reported during the call.

Volunteer firefighters from Dick Johnson, Van Buren, Posey, Jackson and Nevins townships along with emergency personnel from Clay County Sheriff's Department, Clay County Search & Rescue and Trans-Care Ambulance remained on the scene more than four hours attempting to stop the fire from spreading to an adjacent barn and extinguish the fire.
