Kids declare war on cancer

Wednesday, April 20, 2005

Elementary students at Eastside, Forest Park, Meridian, Staunton and Van Buren Elementary schools have waged war against cancer the last two weeks.

In its third year, the Penny Wars are an annual event which students from local elementary schools can participate in to support the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life.

Students at all grade levels collect pennies and other small change during a two-week period in an effort to win prizes for their class. The prizes, which are determined by each individual school, range from extra recess time to special food treats.

Penny Wars 2005 totals

Local elementary students collected enough small change to equal $2,652.86. The money will be donated to the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life "Driving Cancer Out of Our Community," a 12-hour event scheduled at the YMCA. The event begins at 6 p.m. on April 30 and ends at 6 a.m. on May 1.
