Award-winning poet and children's author Valiska Gregory poses with Meridian Elementary students Courtney Jenkins, Caitlyn Jenkins and Alena Pastrick during her visit to the school recently.

"I like all the parts of writing," author Valiska Gregory said after meeting with students at Meridian Elementary while signing autographs. "The work of writing, meeting with the illustrators, seeing the book come alive, I love it all."

Gregory, who has published more than a dozen books, talked about her passion for writing to students at seven schools in the area Friday morning.

"I love children," she said of the numerous visits to schools, libraries and conferences across the country throughout the year. Traveling all the time, she gets "especially busy in the spring."

Her lively presentation emphasizes the importance of reading and exploring creativity to children while explaining how books are created and published.

Gregory's visit was sponsored by the Clay County CAPE grant as a way to encourage children to take pleasure in reading and writing.
