With predictions as high as seven to ten inches of snow, people raced to retailers yesterday in hopes of purchasing anything that will move or melt the white stuff that finally arrived last night.
Christmas gift purchases along with snow shovels, gloves, sand, salt, electric heaters and windshield wash flew off the shelves as fast as stockmen could unpack them at Wal-Mart.
The two local hardware stores, Pell's Shopping Center and Sam's Hardware, were busy as well with shoppers looking for anything that would keep things from freezing.
Sand, used to weight down vehicles and for better traction in the snow if stuck, became a prized commodity for shoppers expecting to travel over the holiday.
At Pell's the sand bags were gone yesterday, but Sam's, which still has some, is selling it on a first come first serve basis.
