Flooding, not rain, hampers mail delivery

Thursday, January 6, 2005

If the flood waters have crossed the road to your house you will not receive mail until it recedes.

"Our carriers make every effort to make deliveries at all addresses. The post office delivered 100 percent of the mail Tuesday, but as conditions become worse it is unknown for today how much mail will be delivered," Brazil Postmaster Dave Nasser said. "We will not make deliveries in unsafe areas where flood waters are over the roads."

High water on roadways should never be driven through by a motorist. The depth of water is not always obvious or the roadbed may be washed out underneath the water.

Rapidly rising water may stall the engine, engulf the vehicle and its occupants, and sweep them away. Motorists need to be aware that two feet of water will carry away most automobiles.

"Mail delivery will continue to be attempted until we are able to do so. But any patron not receiving a delivery may contact the post office to make arrangements to pick up their mail."
