Soldier killed in Iraq had ties to Harmony

Tuesday, January 25, 2005

The war in Iraq keeps getting closer to Clay County. The family of Army Sgt. Kyle Childress, 29, Terre Haute was notified that their son and brother was killed in combat in Iraq, Friday, Jan. 21, 2005.

Born in Terre Haute Dec. 20, 1975, Childress was the son of Keith Childress and Nancy Knight both of Terre Haute. Besides his parents, he is survived by his fiancé, Kirsten Beck of Germany; two brothers, Jason Childress of Terre Haute and Paul Childress of Indianapolis and one sister, Gretta Childress of Harmony.

Gretta Childress said the family has not been given complete details of Kyle's death. However, they were told that he was going door to door looking for insurgents and weapons when he was shot about 2 a.m. Iraqi time. He died at 3 a.m.

"He was an American hero," Gretta said of her brother Monday night. "He will be missed by everyone who knew him. Kyle was to leave Iraq and come home in February. He left for Iraq in February of 2004.

"Kyle was very proud of what he was doing," Gretta continued in a subdued, sad voice. "But he was ready to come home."

Arrangements for Childress' funeral are being made by the DeBaun Funeral Home on Springhill Dr. in Terre Haute. The time of the service will be announced later as it is not known when his body will arrive back in the United States.
