When a vacancy for the position of Circuit Court Judge occurs, such as the vacancy created when Judge Ernie Yelton was appointed to the State Gaming Copmmission, it is filled by an appointment from the Governor of Indiana. The only known qualifications are that the applicant must be an attorney and a resident of the county to be served. The method used to pick the judge is at the discretion of the Governor.
Jane Jankowski, of the Governor's Press Office said Steve Schultz, the General Counsel to the Governor, will pull together a list of potential candidates from applications and nominations. Schultz will lead a team of people who will review the list and possibly reduce it. The Governor will interview those candidates and make a selection.
Jankowski suggested that any interested candidates should send a letter of application to Steve Schultz at the Indiana State House, Room 206.
"The process is completely open now," Jankowski said. "The governor will move quickly but there's no definitive time frame now."
Robert A. Pell and Eric L. Wyndham have announced that they are pursuing the position of Circuit Judge. Both had applied for the prosecutor's job but withdrew their names to pursue the judge position.
